  4.     The specter of a national treasure in foreign hands haunted
  5. the French last week as Swiss food conglomerate Nestle unwrapped
  6. a hostile bid to take over Source Perrier, France's bottled-water
  7. king and a company once deemed financially invulnerable. It was
  8. no solace that Italy's Agnelli group, which is bent on
  9. diversifying beyond automaker Fiat, was competing with Nestle
  10. for the rights to sell the famous little green bottles all over
  11. the world.

  13.     The complicated maneuvering around Perrier, which now
  14. involves about a dozen European food and drink manufacturers,
  15. investment firms and banks, may be the opening gambit of a
  16. Continent-wide scramble in which European and American companies
  17. will grab for the biggest possible portions in the
  18. soon-to-be-restructured European trading community. Friends have
  19. quoted Giovanni Agnelli, elder statesman of the Turin clan, as
  20. saying, "I really won't be satisfied until I have a Nestle." As
  21. the stakes get higher in Europe's food industry, the ultimate
  22. question may become who eats whom first.
